The Cardswipe Machine

What is the card swipe system?

Card swipes can be used to:

  1. activate student accounts and
  2. reset passwords.

Additionally, you may change your password by logging into iAM.

Where are the card swipe machines?

Cardswipe machines can be found at the 24-hour labs of both McWherter and Smith, along with the ground floor of Wilder Tower and the IT Helpdesk in room 124 of the Administration Building.

How do I use the Card Swipe Computer Access Machines?

  1. Swipe your University of Memphis ID through the card swiping slot. You will hear a beep indicating that your card has been scanned, and menu options will appear.
  2. Press the letter of the desired command.  An explanation of each command appears below:

    V - Create student accounts - Use this option if you have never had an account at the U of M. The computer will take a few seconds to build your account (VMS or PH as needed), and will then display your UUID and password.

    R - Reset Password Menu - Use this option if your password(s) have expired, or if you have forgotten them.  The Reset Password Menu options will appear:

    A
    Resets ALL passwords (VMS and PH)
    V
    Resets VMS Cluster password ONLY
    P
    Resets PH alias password ONLY
    X
    Exits out of the session in progress
    Z
    Returns to main menu
  3. Before you leave the station,  press the Enter key until the screen returns to Please swipe your University ID card through the reader now so your password will not remain on the screen.
