The enterprise web content management system currently in use at the University of Memphis is the Luminis™ Content Management Suite (LCMS), one of a suite of administrative software products from higher education software vendor Sungard HE. Web content for an increasing number of official web sites, including the main U of M website, are now managed by a distributed group of webmasters using the LCMS. Authorized web content providers, approvers and site managers with an Internet connection and web browser can access and maintain LCMS-based web pages using the LCMS Inbox channel in the Spectrum portal. There are several benefits to using the LCMS for web site maintenance including the following: - Document lifecycle management provides the ability to identify when a web page should be published, when/if it should be automatically removed from the web site, and when it should be reviewed.
- Document workflow provides the ability to introduce an approval process to webpage publication. For example, LCMS publishing templates can be configured to require manager approval before a web page edited by a content provider becomes active on the live web site. The LMCS Inbox portal channel will display a listing of any documents that are awaiting approval.
- Template-driven web page content makes it easier to ensure that web pages maintain University brand standards and follow established web publishing guidelines. If a template is changed, all of the web pages that uses it will be automatically republished in the next page rendering cycle.
- Centralized system administration and backup. LCMS databases and files are backed up using centralized ITD backup procedures.
A list of web sites managed via the LCMS is maintained on the U of M Web Developer (WebDev) group site: http://www.memphis.edu/itd/webdev/news/lcms.htm Departments and divisional units interested in moving web content to the LCMS should contact ITD Web Services (webservices@memphis.edu)
