HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is the computer code used to create Web pages. Although the current version of HTML 4.1 has been transitioned to XHTML 1.0 (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language), the original will be around for awhile.

XHTML or Extensible Hypertext Markup Language, is the successor of HTML. A family of current and future Document Type Definitions (DTD) and modules that reproduce, subset, and extend HTML. XHTML Family document types are all XML-based, and ultimately designed to work in conjunction with XML-based user agents.

W3C offers W3C Recommended list of DTDs for Web pages.
